The former head of bankruptcy and restructuring practice at TianTong Law Firm, Chi Weihong, has established Shanghai-based Zai Sheng Law Firm.

The National Lawyer Credit Information Publicity System shows that the justice authority gave the new firm the green light on 25 September. Chi is the managing partner of the firm, who is joined by partners Mao Hongkai and Jiang Minghui.

Chi has confirmed the move to China Business Law Journal, saying the firm would “gradually hire additional partners”.

The official WeChat account of the Shanghai Putuo District Political Consultative Conference reported on Monday that Hang Chunfang, chairman of the district’s political consultative conference, visited Zai Sheng.

“Zai Sheng is a boutique law firm dedicated to assisting distressed companies with restructuring and regeneration, specialising in corporate debt restructuring, bankruptcy restructuring, related dispute resolution, investment and financing, and mergers and acquisitions … It has established strategic co-operation with a number of financial investment institutions,” the account said.

Mao was previously on the bankruptcy team at TianTong, while Jiang was a partner at Sunhold Law Firm. Jiang has also served as the deputy director of the Business Development Committee at the Shenzhen Bankruptcy Trustee Association and was a member of the Guangdong Bankruptcy Trustee Association.

In July, Du Wenle, Zhang Yao and Zhu Lei from the bankruptcy and restructuring team at TianTong joined Han Kun Law Offices, while Lin Wenhui and Wang Pan returned to the Shanghai office in September to revitalise TianTong’s bankruptcy practice.

In addition, after the partners’ exodus last year, TianTong’s Shanghai office launched a new energy and environment practice this year, hiring partner Wen Min as the head of the practice, and appointing the criminal compliance partner Yin Qing.
