South Korean law firm Shin & Kim has hired former vice-chairman at the Korea Exchange Hyojae Cho as a senior adviser to strengthen the firm’s capabilities in advising financial institutions on capital markets and regulatory compliance.
He will be part of Shin & Kim’s financial regulation group, led by partner Seongkoo Cheong, who also joined the firm in September 2024.
Cho was at the Korea Exchange from 2019 to 2023. Before that, he spent 31 years at the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), a Korean financial watchdog, serving in key positions including team leader of the legal affairs office and director of the financial investment bureau.
During his tenure at the FSS, Cho was responsible for key capital markets oversight functions, including sanctions deliberations related to regulatory violations by banks, securities firms, insurance companies and savings banks, as well as the supervision of derivatives market trading.
