Jakarta-based firm Walalangi & Partners (W&P) in association with Nishimura & Asahi has hired local counsel Heru Mardijarto to deepen its project development and regulatory practice groups.
“In Indonesia, our focus will be to continue supporting high-quality inbound investments in infrastructure, renewable energy and industrial development,” Luky Walalangi, managing partner of W&P, told Asia Business Law Journal.
He added that regionally, the firm aimed to strengthen cross-border co-operation among Nishimura & Asahi’s offices in Southeast Asia and Tokyo, allowing them to provide clients with support throughout the investment cycle, from regulatory structuring to financing, construction, and operation.
Mardijarto has joined the firm from Makarim & Taira S where he served as a partner for nine years. He brings 25 years of corporate and commercial law experience, with expertise in infrastructure, construction, energy and regulatory matters. He has advised state-owned enterprises and multinationals on high-profile projects, including power plants, geothermal developments, cross-border gas pipelines and telecommunications infrastructure.
He also strengthened the firm’s ability to serve clients involved in large-scale and complex projects, including PPP (public-private partnership), EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contracts, renewable energy development and regulatory compliance, said Walalangi.
In his role as local counsel, Mardijarto would focus primarily on infrastructure, construction, energy and regulatory projects, said Walalangi. The firm also expected him to mentor younger lawyers and enhance its internal practices in project and government-related work, he added.
Walalangi has also observed that Indonesia’s infrastructure and energy sectors have focused on sustainable development and renewable transition, which have brought new regulatory challenges, including ESG (environmental, social and governance) compliance, evolving procurement rules, and increasingly complex PPP frameworks.
With Mardijarto’s experience in managing infrastructure and energy projects, especially those involving government contracts, EPC works and regulatory negotiations, he would strengthen the firm’s capability to help clients navigate the above challenges and to mitigate risks, said Walalangi.
