Osaka-based Oh-Ebashi LPC & Partners is set to launch a business alliance with MAPS Law Firm and open a Jakarta desk from July this year, bolstering services in Indonesia as part of overall efforts to strengthen its Asia desk.
Oh-Ebashi told Asia Business Law Journal that, through the Jakarta desk, the firm would target work from companies currently operating in Indonesia, as well as those that want to consider expanding into the Southeast Asian country in the future.
And such work, Oh-Ebashi added, would specifically encompass M&A, joint ventures, licensing and franchise business for Indonesian market entry. It would also cover debt collection, labour management in Indonesia, fraud investigation and involvement in insolvency proceedings.
Associate Kohei Omi, a Japan-qualified attorney currently based in Oh-Ebashi’s Osaka office whose previous experience includes working at Jakarta-based Dentons HPRP, will be stationed in Indonesia’s capital. Omi, which is also New York Bar-qualified and has previously worked at the Amsterdam office of Benelux law firm AKD, focuses on corporate and M&A, dispute resolution, risk management and compliance
MAPS senior partner and co-founder Julius Singara said the alliance was specifically aimed at enhancing services for Japanese companies, supporting Japanese clients in Indonesia and handling cross-border matters involving Japan. Additionally, assisting other international companies exploring expansion opportunities in Indonesia was also one of the objectives for the alliance.
“The dedicated Jakarta desk is key to this strategy, signifying a strong commitment to the Indonesian market and enabling seamless, integrated client support through effective collaboration between our firms,” said Singara.
Singara added that the collaboration, particularly with Omi leading the Jakarta desk, would bolster the two firms’ collective ability to handle diverse corporate and litigation matters, especially those involving legal issues in Indonesia and the broader Southeast Asian region.
“It combines MAPS Law Firm’s established track record supporting Japanese businesses in Indonesia with Oh-Ebashi’s extensive experience and relationships with Japanese clients operating internationally.”
