Jakarta-based MHMS Advocates has appointed former Bank Aladin Syariah’s head of legal and compliance Halida Nurina as counsel, aiming to strengthen its financial services offerings.
The firm’s managing partner Brian Manuel told Asia Business Law Journal, the move aimed to support banks, financial institutions and fintech companies in this practice area.
“The rapid growth of fintech (digital payments, P2P lending, blockchain, AI in finance) requires constant legal guidance on new products, data privacy, consumer protection, cybersecurity and evolving licensing,” said Manuel.
Manuel also observed that authorities such as the Indonesia Financial Services Authority (OJK) and Bank Indonesia are updating regulations for digital banking, risk management and sustainable finance, requiring clients to stay updated on the latest trends and directions of policymakers to stay compliant.
The MHMS managing partner said Nurina’s extensive knowledge of Indonesian financial services law, covering regulation, licensing, compliance and transactions, made her an invaluable asset for their team and clients navigating Indonesia’s dynamic financial landscape.
Nurina, who brings more than 15 years of private practice and in-house legal expertise, specialises in advising clients from banking and financial institutions to fintech and technology companies in Indonesia on corporate and commercial transactions, including financing and acquisitions.
Having started her legal career as an associate at Melli Darsa & Co (now PwC Legal Indonesia) in 2009, Nurina had practised at Indonesian law firms including Baker & McKenzie International’s member firm HHP Law Firm before going in-house in 2017.
During the past eight years, besides serving as Bank Aladin Syariah’s legal and compliance head, she has also held senior in-house legal roles. These included working as a senior compliance manager at Indonesia’s payments, rewards and financial services platform OVO, and a senior legal manager at textiles company Apac Inti Corpora.
With the addition of Nurina, who is currently the firm’s only counsel, MHMS counts four partners and eight associates.
