HSA Advocates managing partner Hemant Sahai set out on a nine-day trek on 10 February to raise money for the Indian Cancer Society. Sahai was accompanied by fellow partner Navin Syiem. The Chadar trek requires navigating over 100 kilometres of icy terrain at altitudes of 12,500 feet, with temperatures ranging from minus 15 to minus 30 degrees Celsius. The word chadar literally means “blanket”, and is used to describe the mostly frozen Zanskar River in Ladakh, Kashmir – the location of the trek. The river retains rapids in many places where spring water prevents ice formation.
