The Screenwriters Rights Association of India (SRAI) as a copyright society with the Indian government and is now empowered to extend copyright protection to all the works of members under the law.
The SRAI must not be confused with the , which was formerly the Film Writers’ Association, and the latter has been a registered society since 1960.
Registration allows the SRAI to:
- Set minimum standards for work conditions, remuneration, compensation etc., for screenwriters;
- Assist in legal action against violators of rights of screenwriters;
- Streamline the licensing of screenwriters’ works to reduce friction and conflicts; and
- Align practices with global trends and industry demands.
The SRAI’s scope of coverage would include other formats of scripts such as newer digital platforms of social media, online streaming services, etc.
Registration of the SRAI extends the same level of respect, compensation and fair working conditions to screenwriters in India, as that given to counterparts in other established sectors.
