The Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) has appointed former Malaysian judge Mary Lim Thiam Suan as its new director, succeeding Sundra Rajoo.

The AIAC told Asia Business Law Journal that “[Lim] will build on the strong foundations laid by the previous directors to place the AIAC as one of the leading arbitral institutions in Asia and beyond.”

Lim is a former judge of the Federal Court of Malaysia and is chair of the Protem Committee for the AIAC Court of Arbitration. She was the first judge of the Construction Court in Kuala Lumpur, and has conducted workshops on criminal, civil and appellate advocacy. In addition, she has taught advanced advocacy courses at Keble College, Oxford.

This appointment follows consultation between the government of Malaysia and the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organisation (AALCO) under the host country agreement.

The AIAC told Asia Business Law Journal that “under the supplementary agreement to the host country agreement signed between the government of Malaysia and the … AALCO in February 2024, the overall objective of which is to regenerate confidence in the [alternative dispute resolution] ADR community, the AIAC reform initiatives are in line with global standards and best practices”.
