The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has launched a comprehensive market study on artificial intelligence (AI) and competition.
According to the official announcement, the “transformative capabilities of AI have significant procompetitive potential” and the study will explore its implications for competition, and the potential challenges it may pose in various industries. The study will be a knowledge building exercise to understand nuances of impact that development of AI would have on the competition ecosystem.
According to the CCI, the study aims to understand critical AI systems and market ecosystems, including identifying key stakeholders and competition parameters. Additionally, it will examine potential competition issues emerging in AI markets, assess the opportunities and risks associated with AI applications, and evaluate their impacts on competition, efficiency and innovation.
A review of existing and evolving regulatory and legal frameworks governing AI in India and other major jurisdictions will also be a crucial part of the study.
The CCI said the study would also involve engaging with various stakeholders to gain a “holistic understanding of the issues at the intersection of AI and competition”. This would involve identifying trends and patterns in AI to set enforcement and advocacy priorities for the CCI, it said.
