About 100 in-house counsel and legal experts gained knowledge from the Indonesian Corporate Counsel Association (ICCA) half-day conference, titled Navigating International Arbitration as General Counsel, in Jakarta.
The gathering, held at the International Financial Centre, addressed issues including the practicality and affordability of arbitration, how foreign arbitration awards are enforced in Indonesia and how to make strategic choices when resolving disputes.
About 100 mid to senior level in-house counsel and legal experts attended the event, which was hosted in collaboration with Maramis Purba Santi Singara (MAPS) Law Firm, Singapore Management University, CHP Law, and the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR).
Sharing their expertise, insights and advice, speakers included: Wahyu Setiawan, the ICCA’s head of international collaboration and partnership; Rando Purba, co-founder of MAPS Law Firm; Shoeb Kagda, director at Singapore Management University; Darius Chan, deputy director of the Singapore International Dispute Resolution Academy; Danny Quah, director at CHP Law; and Thara Gopalan, vice president of the ICDR.
Purba told Asia Business Law Journal: “The conference proved to be a resounding success. Substantial attendance from a diverse audience, including corporate counsel and practising lawyers, reflected the growing interest and relevance of international arbitration in today’s legal landscape.”
The primary goal of the event was educating in-house counsel about the complexities of international arbitration, recognising it as a preferred method for dispute resolution.
Discussions covered not only the logistical aspects – such as drafting effective arbitration clauses and choosing the right arbitration institution – but also the current challenges of enforcing international arbitration awards in Indonesia, and the latest regulatory changes impacting the field.
“Overall, the event successfully met its objectives, equipping attendees with a deeper understanding of international arbitration and practical tools to navigate this complex field,” said Purba.
