Han Kun Law Offices has recruited Melody He as a partner to its Hong Kong branch, marking the PRC firm’s second hiring within a week after adding another cross-border capital markets specialist Alex Tao.

He has been practising in the US and Hong Kong for around 25 years, and clients have consulted her on listings, PE/VC, cross-border M&A, joint ventures and bond issuances. She has also been advising companies on international sanctions and export control matters.

In the past 18 years, He has worked at multiple international firms as a partner, including Herbert Smith Freehills, Morrison Foerster, DLA Piper and Ashurst.

Tao, who has more than 20 years of experience, joined Han Kun on 3 January.

When international law firms have been scaling back their operations in China, jumping ship to PRC peers has become an apparent choice for some lawyers.

Last September, Weil’s former of counsel Kenny Yu joined DaHui Lawyers around the time when the US firm shut its sole mainland branch in Shanghai. In the same month, former Morrison Foerster partners Vivian Yiu and Huang Ke joined Jingtian & Gongcheng amid MoFo’s announcement on closing its Beijing branch.
