Han Kun Law Offices has expanded its Hong Kong branch with the addition of Alex Tao as a partner to boost the firm’s capability in international capital markets.

With more than 20 years of experience, Tao has advised tech, retail and new energy companies on bond issuances, US IPOs and listings in Hong Kong. He has been assisting clients on syndicated loans, debt management and cross-border restructuring.

During the past eight years, Tao has been a Hong Kong-based partner at Allen & Overy and Milbank. The Mandarin, Shanghainese and English fluent speaker has also previously worked in Shanghai and New York for other law firms.

Han Kun’s latest hiring aligns with the current recruitment trend in the Chinese legal market. When US-based law firms, including Milbank, have scaled down their operations in the mainland during the past two years, Han Kun and other PRC firms are actively hiring lawyers with international law backgrounds to grow their cross-border business.

In October last year, Han Kun’s New York branch hired partner Steve Lin who is based in New York, Beijing and Hong Kong.

Including Tao, Han Kun’s Hong Kong office has 12 partners and consultants, more than half of whom hold qualifications to practise in multiple countries or regions.
