Amitabh Lal Das has taken up a new role as chief legal officer at Hyundai Motor India.
“The predominant reason prompting my move from Bajaj Auto to Hyundai has been the nature, size and timing of the Hyundai opportunity,” Das told India Business Law Journal.
“It is a chief legal officer (CLO) role at the business head level that comes with a well-oiled and effective legal department successfully developed and nurtured by a very capable general counsel who continues to be a lynchpin for the future of the department.”
Das is a seasoned legal professional with almost three decades of experience in court practice as well as law firm roles. His previous positions include general counsel at Bajaj Auto and director and head – legal, compliance and regulatory at Max Life Insurance. In the Max Life role, he led strategic legal and compliance initiatives and collaborated closely with the board and regulators.
Other posts include senior legal director, general counsel, and head of government relations at Yahoo India where he managed legal, compliance, and public policy matters across India and the Asia-Pacific region. Earlier in his career, he was director legal at Sapient where he handled global contracts and regulatory compliance.
Das, who joins Hyundai Motor India at a crucial point in the company’s history, said “Since the CLO role was created in advance of the IPO being mindful of the senior leadership requirement, it presented an opportunity to be at the right place at the right time: prior to 含羞草社区 largest IPO [yet].”
He added: “This is the beginning of a new and exciting journey, which I am proud as well as privileged to embark upon at Hyundai India.”
On his vision, Das said, “As far as I knew before I joined, India would be the only jurisdiction where Hyundai is listed outside of the parent country, Korea. The long-term vision is to have an exemplary legal, compliance and corporate governance department that sets the highest benchmarks of excellence, is an enabler for the business while balancing the role of the guide and the guardian of the legal and ethical dimensions of a corporation’s existence.”
