Shanghai-headquartered Wintell & Co has taken over local boutique Fides Law Firm to set up a Nanjing office, further strengthening its integrated Yangtze River Delta strategy.

The Nanjing office is headed by senior partner Chen Yang, who was a founding partner of Fides Law Firm, focusing on corporate and commercial matters and labour law. She has built her practice in Jiangsu for more than 20 years and previously spent over a decade in government service.

The new office has assembled teams covering shipping, foreign-related legal services and commercial dispute resolution.

At the opening ceremony, Chi Rida, chair of the firm’s national partners’ committee, said: “The launch of the Nanjing office is an important step in Wintell’s legal services map for the Yangtze River Delta, and a key move in advancing our capability in foreign-related legal services.”

The firm now operates 18 domestic branches, including in Beijing, Tianjin, Changchun, Shandong, Shaanxi, Hubei, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Jiangsu and Zhejiang, as well as overseas offices in Singapore, Dubai and Djibouti, an African country at a key Belt and Road Initiative node.

At the launch event, director Mervyn Chen said Wintell was actively pushing ahead with AI development. He told China Business Law Journal: “Wintell’s in-house technology team started AI research and development in 2024. During its development, the firm targeted practical application scenarios and, by combining digital systems, software and AI, gradually innovated its management and business service systems, and used AI to create real value.”
