Shanghai-headquartered Sunwell Law Firm has recruited Paris Bar-qualified lawyer (avocat) Song Liwei as a senior counsel based in Shanghai, bolstering the firm’s capabilities in China-Europe trade and investment matters.
“Dr Song is a highly regarded legal practitioner both in China and abroad,” Steven Yu, managing partner at Sunwell, told China Business Law Journal. “His addition will enhance the firm’s expertise in advising on the new wave of foreign investment into China and guiding Chinese enterprises expanding overseas, particularly across francophone regions.”
Song specialises in China-EU and China-France trade and investment, with expertise in trade remedies, cross-border commercial litigation and outbound investment. He has long advised Chinese enterprises investing in France and other European jurisdictions, as well as European firms entering the Chinese mainland market.
Song, with 26 years of experience, has worked in Paris, Brussels, Beijing and Shanghai, and is fluent in both French and English as working languages. He once represented Wenzhou and Ningbo manufacturers in an EU anti-dumping investigation into disposable lighters, which was one of the first cases brought against China after it joined the WTO. The complaint was eventually withdrawn.
Before joining Sunwell, Song was a partner at Zhong Lun Law Firm and French firm Bignon Lebray, both at their Shanghai offices. He previously worked at the US firm Coudert Brothers, the French firm Gide, and Jade & Fountain PRC Lawyers.
In 2025, several elite teams of lawyers, including Yu, formerly a senior partner at Hiways Law Firm, joined Sunwell, which was founded in 2022. The firm has since repositioned itself to focus on international trade, corporate and commercial matters, capital markets, cybersecurity and data compliance.
Sunwell currently operates an office in Hanoi, Vietnam, and has signed a joint operation agreement with Hong Kong firm Young & Co Rowdget W.
