Silkroad, Anchorite and Sage Law Firm has added Gary Yang as a partner in its Shanghai office. Previously, he was a partner at Dacheng Law Offices and a member of the global environmental, social and governance (ESG) management committee.

Yang specialises in handling litigation, administrative penalties and corporate criminal liability in the ESG sector. He can offer advice on M&A, investment and compliance for projects with environmental factors.

Last year, Yang represented a company in an environmental pollution case, employing ESG standards as part of a compliance strategy. China’s Supreme People’s Procuratorate recognised the first domestic attempt as an exemplary case for its effort to localise the international ESG standard.

Yang, qualified in China and New York, started his career at Zhong Lun Law Firm and Simmons & Simmons, before taking the role of legal director at Air Liquide in Greater China in 2009. He later became the legal director for North Asia at Akzo Nobel, the world’s third-largest coatings company by revenue, before joining Dacheng in 2018.
