Ogier claims to have become the first offshore law firm with an office in mainland China, having opened in Shanghai in July. The office is headed by Kristy Calvert, who is a native Mandarin and Shanghainese speaker. Calvert was previously the legal director for China and Asia at mining and metals group Rio Tinto.
The office aims to provide Chinese clients with advice relating to the offshore jurisdictions of the British Virgin Islands, Cayman, Guernsey and Jersey. Areas of expertise encompass debt and equity capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, banking and finance, investment funds, and trusts and private wealth.
The Shanghai office will work closely with Ogier’s Hong Kong operation, which the firm forecasts will double in size over the next three years.
