Hogan Lovells has bolstered its presence in Singapore with the appointment of data privacy and cybersecurity partner Charmian Aw for its global regulatory and IP practice.

Biswajit Chatterjee, Hogan Lovells’ office managing partner for Singapore, told Asia Business Law Journal that the appointment comes at a time when regulatory scrutiny around data privacy and cybersecurity is intensifying in the region.

“As Southeast Asia continues to rise in prominence in global supply chains amid geopolitical developments globally, it is vital for businesses to be able to transmit data across state borders. Yet there is no uniform approach to data regulation in the region. Rather, local requirements can be highly intricate, nuanced and fast-changing,” said Chatterjee.

Aw was previously a partner at Squire Patton Boggs, a counsel at Reed Smith and a director at Drew & Napier where she worked for more than 11 years. She brings experience in data privacy, cybersecurity and technology transactions across the Asia-Pacific region.

Eduardo Ustaran, Hogan Lovells’ practice area co-leader for privacy and cybersecurity, echoed Chatterjee’s comment and said a key concern for businesses was ensuring access to data for AI development while maintaining regulatory compliance. “However, one aspect where we are seeing Asean regulators being particularly progressive is their active encouragement for technology-friendly solutions like sandboxes, which shows a greater degree of creativity than in other parts of the world,” said Ustaran.

The firm’s expansion in Singapore follows a series of strategic hires, including partner Rob Palmer, previously a managing partner at Ashurst.
