Helmsman has appointed Teoh Su Yin as the new corporate, banking and finance director to boost capabilities in areas they are developing – corporate governance/compliance, IP and TMT.
Helmsman’s managing partner Ian Teo told Asia Business Law Journal that Teoh’s core competency was cross-border transactional banking and corporate work, and she brought a wide range of competencies and clients which complement the firm’s existing ones.
He added that her soft skills go hand in hand with the use of tech, such as AI and data analytics, to manage contracts and relationships.
Teoh’s credentials and experience in learning and development enabled her to employ process facilitation, principled negotiation and facilitative training as valuable tools to help clients manage legal risks and build organisational resilience, said Teo.
Prior to joining Helmsman, Teoh worked as a litigator and also served as a director at Gateway Law Corporation.
Among Teoh’s achievements are advising on banking and finance transactions, including acting for the lenders in facilities totalling USD1.5 billion for a Southeast Asian government, a USD29 million bill discounting facility for government agencies of a Southeast Asian country, and a USD468 million facility that partially financed a Singapore entity’s acquisition of an Australian company.
Helmsman, founded in 2019, initially established itself as a specialised shipping and commodities firm. It has since expanded its services to include commercial disputes, employment, corporate, banking and finance and recently, IP and TMT. The firm currently operates offices in Singapore and Hong Kong.
