CMS has recruited Ilan Freiman as a partner for its energy, projects and construction practice in Sydney and Hong Kong to expand capabilities in this sector across the Asia-Pacific region.
Caryn Miller, CMS partner and joint managing director for Asia and the Middle East, told Asia Business Law Journal that Freiman would continue working for Hong Kong and Singapore-based clients, as well as others across the region and team members would be based in each location.
“We are increasingly operating our practices on a regional basis through our key hubs in Hong Kong, Singapore and now Sydney to provide the best level of service to clients and opportunities for our lawyers across the APAC,” said Miller.
Freiman, a transactional infrastructure and project delivery lawyer with 25 years of experience, will be based in Sydney and maintain a presence in Hong Kong.
Prior to joining CMS, Freiman worked at Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner as a partner for more than 10 years, where he was co-head of the Asia real estate and infrastructure practice. He was also a partner at Haley & Co in association with Clayton Utz.
His practice spans the full life cycle of energy and infrastructure developments from project structuring and procurement to regulatory matters, joint ventures and the development aspects of M&A.
While based in Sydney, Freiman will continue working with clients across the region. “Given that we are growing our EPC [energy, projects and construction] base in Australia and he [Freiman] is Australian, it makes sense for him to base himself there but to continue with his role spanning the region,” said Adrian Bell, CMS partner and joint managing director for Asia and the Middle East.
