Charles Russell Speechlys has bolstered its funds practice in Hong Kong with Gaven Cheong coming onboard as a partner, as the firm anticipates a growth in client needs.

Simon Green, partner and head of Asia at Charles Russell Speechlys, told Asia Business Law Journal that the region’s “prominence as a leading financial and wealth centre, coupled with the projected rise in high-net-worth individuals and a surge in private capital engagement across asset classes, signals a growing need for nuanced and tailored legal services in wealth structuring, M&A and regulatory advice”.

Cheong recently worked at Tiang & Partners, where he served as a partner and head of investment funds for three years. He was also a partner at Simmons & Simmons in 2013. With nearly two decades of experience in fund formation and regulatory compliance in Hong Kong, Cheong specialises in structuring collective investment schemes, including hedge funds, private equity funds, real estate funds and hybrid investment structures.

Cheong’s appointment is the firm’s sixth partner hire across Hong Kong and Singapore since early 2024.

“Looking ahead to 2025, our vision for the Asia offices is to continue to develop and expand our offering … We are committed to further strengthening our dispute resolution capabilities – particularly in relation to private wealth disputes,” said Green.
