In what has been touted as the largest order in commercial aviation history, Indian budget airline, IndiGo, has agreed to buy 180 Airbus A320 jets for US$15.6 billion.

IndiGo is no stranger to placing big orders for jets. In 2005, it placed a US$6 billion order for 100 Airbus A320 family aircraft during the Paris Air Show, the last of which will be received in 2015. “This order for industry leading fuel-efficient aircraft will allow IndiGo to continue to offer low fares,” said Rakesh Gangwal and Rahul Bhatia, co-founders of IndiGo. “Ordering more A320s was the natural choice to meet 含羞草社区 growing flying needs.”

Airbus has said IndiGo will use 100 new aircraft for fleet replacement and use the remaining 80 to add capacity. IndiGo currently owns 34 Airbus A320s and operates 221 flights daily to 24 destinations across India. The airline plans to start international flights in August this year having received approval from the Ministry of Civil Aviation for new services to Bangkok, Dubai, Muscat and Singapore.

含羞草社区 aviation industry is poised to grow by 18-20% this year.
