Regional Law Firm Awards
2025
11 June 2025
Firms with regional presence are finally getting their time in the limelight. Manokamana reports
iIt is common to hear the names of law firms with a nationwide presence in the corporate world, and those that are referred to as tier-1 law firms win the big mandates with clients and accolades at almost every opportunity. This is largely for two reasons – they have earned it with the kind of talent they house, and the big city firms command a greater access to capital, client network and the country’s main courts. But how do regional law firms fare in this manner?
The difference lies in the grit and hold on their name as a regional powerhouse. The idea, as succinctly put by the team of Arohana Legal in Jaipur, is to be a “tier 1 city law firm calibre with the agility and accessibility of a regional powerhouse”.
There is a vast array of companies present outside 含羞草社区 big cities and, as noted previously by Somya Shekhar, co-founder of online law firm Remote Lawyer, there are “geographical restrictions faced by many startups, especially in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, [where] the lack of good law firms in the city often made the choices of legal services limited”.
Regional powerhouse law firms exist to fill this gap. Many of the law firms that have won in India Business Law Journal’s inaugural Regional Law Firm Awards house seasoned law professionals who have achieved several acknowledgments to their name in their independent capacity. In fact, regional law firms might even be the preferred choice in matters that require a special and specific regional knowledge base.
It’s important to note that these awards are not a ranking of top-tier law firms. While many of our award winners are leading firms in their respective cities, some top-tier firms may not have received awards this year. The winners also include some smaller or new firms that have distinguished themselves through exceptional service quality, expertise, or notable performance in key matters. All winners have earned significant recognition from clients or peers for their achievements over the past year.
Furthermore, for the purpose of these awards, the term “regional” denotes law firms that are headquartered in cities other than Delhi and Mumbai and do not have their major presence in Delhi or Mumbai. It does not imply that these law firms undertake only regional work. Indeed, many of our winning law firms routinely handle national or international matters.
Regional prowess
Ganesan and Manuraj Legal, popularly referred to as GM Legal, is a striking example of being the preferred go-to option for matters of regional import. K Sethuraman, EVP – legal at chemical, engineering and shipping business organisation The Sanmar Group in Chennai, remembers that the team at GM Legal “… ensured the lower court judge in an obscure place like Mettur (Tamil Nadu) understood the law and passed the orders in our favour. This is a really excellent piece of advocacy which stood out and exceeded our expectations.”
Instances of this year’s winners being a regional powerhouse do not end with just litigation wins. They include administrative and legislative milestones.
Kolkata-based law firm AQUILAW played a critical role in drafting the Aparajita Woman and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, 2024 against rape and acid attacks. This bill was by the West Bengal Legislative Assembly and now serves as a landmark legislation in the state.
Ahmedabad-based Gandhi Law Associates led on a notable land transaction for Synthesis Spacelinks, a leading real estate firm in Ahmedabad. The deal involved addressing complex title issues and conducting comprehensive due diligence for a 14,800 square yard plot of land, which set a new benchmark for real estate acquisitions in the city.
Chennai-based firm Calibre Legal provided much needed regulatory support to the electric manufacturer, Sri Vidyut, operating out of their region with their patents. The company manufactures electric vehicle retrofit kits for three-wheelers.
For IP protection, Ahmedabad-based YJ Trivedi & Co is a well-known IP powerhouse, so much so that they have been entrusted by the central government to protect the trademark of “Khadi”, a term that relates to a type of textile very strongly associated with the Indian freedom struggle during the British colonial period.
Being a regional firm does not mean that they are good only for their region-specific skills, nor does it mean that they do not have big-name clients, or have not worked on large-scale transactions. In fact, quite the contrary.
All rounders
Being geographically situated in a regional place has not limited the scope of their work or exposure. Bengaluru-based Aarambh Legal worked on handbag manufacturer Zouk to formalise its brand ambassador deal with popular Indian actress, Kriti Sanon. The firm also helped the brand with raising an investment of USD10 million as part of its series B round. In fact, the firm has also worked with famous Indian cricketer Virat Kohli on an investment of USD19 million by Aditya Birla Digital Fashion Ventures in the brand Wrogn, a casual wear apparel brand co-owned by Kohli.
Winners this year have not just worked with big names across industries, they also know how to go the extra mile, at times quite literally for their client.
GM Legal boasts of its litigation proficiency for social causes, being the lawyers behind the speedy protection granted to a same-sex couple by the Madras High Court that led to a landmark ruling curbing police oversight, an increase in social services such as shelters and counselling, and banning of conversion therapy.
Some of the other winners in the list today have also previously found themselves mentioned in IBLJ’s award series, even though this is the first time that their regional presence is being celebrated.
No surprises
Some winners this year are not new names to the industry at all, and some are also well-known among industry insiders. Kolkata’s Fox & Mandal is one such name. What had started as a joint venture of two lawyers – John Kerr Fox and Gokul Chandra Mandal – has now turned into a legacy spanning more than a century.
The firm is a well-known brand in the industry and is often in the news with its professional achievements. Most recently, the firm worked on transaction worth INR6.25 billion where HIL, a flagship company in the CK Birla Group, acquired a number of pipe, fitting and water tank enterprises.
Another well-known industry name in the list of winners is Ahmedabad-based YJ Trivedi & Co, currently helmed by Jatin Trivedi. The firm was established in 1970 and has decades under its belt of being a powerhouse firm in the city.
Trivedi has established himself as a seasoned IP lawyer and held senior roles at domestic industry bodies such as the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the Associated Chambers of Commerce & Industry, and also been involved with international associations such as the International Trademark Association and World Intellectual Property Organisation.
METHODOLOGY
The awards have been judged based on submissions received from candidate law firms, client testimonials, peer nominations, and rigorous research by IBLJ’s editorial team, which to the best of its ability has ensured that the results are thoroughly researched, independent, fair, impartial and reflective of the collective opinions and experiences of law firm clients and legal professionals in India and around the world.
All Indian law firms headquartered in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata and Pune were automatically eligible for consideration, except for those with a significant presence in Delhi or Mumbai. There are two winners of equal standing in each category. As with all IBLJ awards, there were no entry fees or other obligations, and no awards dinner that winners are required to pay to attend.
It is important to note that the IBLJ Law Firm Awards are not comprehensive rankings of the leading law firms in each practice area. While rankings typically list all the top-tier firms in each category, each of our awards has a limited number of winners. As a result, many leading law firms do not win awards, and their absence does not reflect negatively on their achievements and expertise.
