Bird & Bird has recently expanded its Greater Bay Area team with the addition of two partners, Lucia He in Shenzhen and Katherine Cheung in Hong Kong, strengthening the firm’s corporate and dispute resolution capabilities in the region.
He has more than 15 years of legal experience, with a focus on cross?border M&A and outbound investment matters involving Chinese companies. Qualified to practise law in the PRC, England and Wales, and New York state, she advises clients across a wide range of industries, including energy, technology and telecommunications, advanced manufacturing, automotive, retail and consumer products.
Prior to joining Bird & Bird, He was a counsel at A&O Shearman’s Beijing office and previously worked at the London offices of Simmons & Simmons and Olswang, which merged with CMS Nabarro in 2017 to form CMS. Earlier in her career, she served as legal director at ZTE’s European office, where she led the company’s legal teams across North America and Europe.
Cheung focuses on commercial dispute resolution, advising on matters including contractual and shareholder disputes, regulatory investigations, contentious insolvency, professional negligence and white?collar crime. She represents both Chinese mainland and international clients across sectors such as energy, technology, mining, pharmaceuticals and distribution.
Before joining Bird & Bird, Cheung was a partner at Dorsey’s Hong Kong office, and earlier served as counsel in King & Wood Mallesons’ Hong Kong office. She is admitted to practise in Hong Kong and England and Wales, is a native Mandarin speaker, and is fluent in English and Cantonese.
Bird & Bird established its Shenzhen representative office in October 2023, making its first expansion move in the Chinese mainland after a 15-year pause. In a press release, the firm said the addition of the two partners advanced its strategic growth in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and further strengthens its overall capabilities in the region.
