Based on an extensive survey of in-house counsel and international legal professionals, we reveal 含羞草社区 most recommended lawyers. Katherine Abraham reports.

Each year, following a rigorous selection process that takes in the nominations and endorsements of thousands of clients, peers and members of our editorial board, India Business Law Journal recognises the achievements of senior lawyers whose leadership, expertise and work on high-stakes matters have been lauded by their clients and peers.

The featured lawyers fall into three categories, which collectively capture the breadth of excellence within 含羞草社区 legal community.

A-List lawyers

As the backbone of 含羞草社区 elite legal community, these lawyers are trusted advisers on the country’s most important deals, matters and disputes. They may hail from powerhouse firms or pioneering boutiques, but they share a common thread: impeccable technical ability, commercial acumen, and a track record of delivering sophisticated, cutting-edge solutions to complex matters. Being named on the A-List marks them as among the very best in the profession.

Vanguards

Vanguards are A-List lawyers who serve as partners at 含羞草社区 top-tier law firms, as recognised by IBLJ’s 2025 Law Firm Awards. They are the strategic heavyweights behind landmark transactions and high-stakes disputes, leading many of the country’s largest and most intricate mandates and setting benchmarks for excellence in both practice and client service. Vanguards are identified by a “Vanguard” badge on their photograph.

Icons

Icons are the luminaries of 含羞草社区 legal profession: visionary leaders, institution builders, and unrivalled rainmakers. Often at the helm of the country’s most admired law firms, legal teams or professional bodies, they command deep respect and extraordinary influence across both the bar and the boardroom. Their impact extends beyond individual matters to shape the direction of 含羞草社区 legal profession. To be recognised as an Icon is to receive one of the highest honours in Indian law. Icons are identified by an “Icon” badge on their photograph.

A fourth category, Future legal leaders – featured in our previous issue – recognises younger lawyers of exceptional quality who are poised to move into strategic leadership roles in the legal profession.

This year’s A-List is based on more than 5,000 nominations and testimonials from around the world for Indian lawyers who have powered their firms, made bold decisions and built trusted client relationships. Nominations were considered in conjunction with background research by our editorial team and consultation with the members of our editorial board. A full account of the methodology can be read here.

Note: The A-List is indicative of the nominations and testimonials received by IBLJ in late 2025, together with the background research conducted by our editorial team. The composition of the A-List changes from year to year and, given the strict cap on numbers, many outstanding lawyers are not included. The A-List should therefore not be viewed as a comprehensive roster of the country’s leading lawyers, but rather as a snapshot of those who received the strongest endorsements from clients and peers at a particular point in time.
The following analysis highlights the work and achievements of many of this year’s A-List lawyers and includes testimonies from a selection of those who nominated and endorsed them. Space constraints prevent us from covering all those featured.

Open all hours

In the legal profession, where long hours are often the norm, lawyers seek to stand out for their readiness to support clients whenever needed. Their peers and clients say what sets them apart is not just expertise, but reliability and responsiveness at all hours.

While the case for fixed office hours is often debated in the legal profession, for Aliff Fazelbhoy, a senior partner at ALMT Legal in Mumbai, client concerns trump time. Commenting on his cross-border experience, Isidore Caroussis, a director at Chios Navigation, a London-based company engaged in global maritime transport, says: “We have been working with Fazelbhoy on a case [arbitration at Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court] for over 10 years and he has been consistently present to advise and guide.”

Caroussis says that Fazelbhoy’s approach “is practical and measured”, adding that, “Aliff is almost always available both in and outside of office hours to handle a problem”.

Joseph Fesenmair, a partner at Bird & Bird in Munich, finds Safir Anand, a senior partner and the head of department (trademarks, contractual and commercial IP) at Anand and Anand in New Delhi, well-connected and helpful. “He not only has an impressive legal knowledge but [also] a great business acumen. He understands clients’ concerns and always [offers] a convincing strategy on how to proceed.”

While lawyers are known for their command of the written word, managing expectations under time pressure is often just as critical. One such name frequently cited is Ravi Singhania, a managing partner at Singhania & Partners in New Delhi.

Nicholas Backman, a partner at Lapointe Rosenstein Marchand Melan?on in Quebec, says: “In my professional interactions with Ravi, I have consistently found him to be knowledgeable, responsive and practical. His ability to provide clear and succinct advice, often under tight timelines, sets him apart. Ravi combines a deep understanding of the law with a pragmatic approach that helps move transactions forward efficiently.”Nicholas Backman

Rewriting legal history

Women in law is a subject often discussed, particularly in a profession that has traditionally been dominated by men. One icon who has shown the way forward is Zia Mody, a co-founder and managing partner at AZB & Partners in Mumbai. She earns high praise for her continuing contribution to legal excellence in past decades.

Sachin Sawrikar, a managing partner at Artha Bharat Investment Managers IFSC in Muscat, describes Mody as “one of the most distinguished and respected legal professionals in India, widely regarded for her contributions to corporate law, her pioneering leadership in a male-dominated field, and her lasting impact on both legal practice and society”. Sawrikar notes that Zia “has been a transformative figure in shaping the legal landscape, particularly in the realms of mergers and acquisitions, banking and finance law”.

He adds: “Zia’s career is not only marked by her legal brilliance but also by her role as a trailblazer for women in the legal profession. Zia has broken through this barrier, establishing herself as a towering figure in a space where few women have reached such prominence.”

Rabindra Jhunjhunwala, a partner at Khaitan & Co in Mumbai, is known for his work on multimillion-dollar deals and a client roster that includes Merck, Zensar Technologies and the Blackstone Group.

Christian Chin, a partner and the head of M&A at Allen & Gledhill in Singapore, says: “I consider Rabindra a giant in the Indian M&A market, not only for his work on significant M&A transactions but also his role growing Khaitan into one of the top law firms in India over the past 30 years, and burnishing Khaitan’s reputation internationally through his involvement in international conferences such as the International Bar Association.”

Nipun Gupta, a consultant and the head of the India Strategy Group at Bird & Bird in London, notes that Jhunjhunwala “has a wealth of experience and yet remains grounded and focused on getting the client to the right point every time. Rabindra is a lawyer that you can rely on for your clients.”

Martin Brodey, a managing partner at Dorda Rechtsanw?lte in Vienna, who has known Jhunjhunwala for more than a decade, describes him as “an outstanding lawyer with a broad knowledge in the area of M&A, not only as concerns the law itself but also business and more general considerations in India, which is of importance to clients from Europe unfamiliar with local requirements and circumstances”.

Nipun Gupta

Wai King Ng, chairman and senior partner at WongPartnership in Singapore, says: “Rabindra has a strong reputation among international lawyers like myself who are involved in regular cross-border M&A transactions, and who find the need to hire excellent Indian lawyers from time to time. Rabindra is affable and responsive, traits that are highly important when dealing with clients from different cultures and backgrounds.”

Devil in the detail

Some lawyers stand out for their keen eye for detail, particularly when dealing with complex issues. Their clients value them for their precision, steady judgement and ability to turn difficult problems into clear, workable solutions.

Dhaval Vussonji, managing partner at Dhaval Vussonji & Associates in Mumbai, is known for his ability to simplify legal problems. This is a key reason for his success, while others are still untangling the details. Parveen Mahtani, a chief legal officer at Mahindra Life-space Developers in Mumbai, says Vussonji “is exceptional at his work because of his incredible ability to break down complex legal issues and explain them in a way that’s clear and understandable”.

She adds: “What really stands out to me is his versatility, as he’s equally skilled in both litigation and negotiation, often securing favourable results where others might struggle. It’s clear he genuinely cares about his clients.”

Ashish Ahuja, co-managing partner at Wadia Ghandy & Co in Mumbai, is a highly regarded M&A practitioner who has served the profession for three decades, earning recognition for his meticulous attention to detail.

Rishi Gautam, global general counsel at Tata Consumer Products in Mumbai, who has worked with Ahuja, says: “His technical prowess and humility make a wonderful combination. He is a rare combination of actual knowledge and a senior statesman-like approach.”

Hemant Singh, the founder and managing partner of Inttl Advocare in New Delhi, is recognised for his steady judgement and deep understanding of complex IP issues, backed by a detail-driven approach.

Ajay Pratap Singh Chauhan, a patent engineer at LG Soft India in Noida, who has worked with Singh, says Singh’s expertise in intellectual property law, strategic guidance and consistent professionalism “have been instrumental in protecting our innovations and advancing our R&D objectives”.

He adds: “Hemant has demonstrated exceptional skill in managing complex patent matters with precision and integrity. His contributions have added significant value to our operations, and we deeply appreciate their dedication and excellence.”

Akil Hirani, managing partner and head of transactions at Majmudar & Partners in Mumbai, receives high praise for his more than 25 years of outstanding service to the field of law.

I Bobby Majumder, a senior partner at Frost Brown Todd in Dallas, Texas, says: “Akil is a vigorous advocate in corporate transactions, while keeping his eye squarely focused on the client’s commercial objectives. He doesn’t waste time in pyrrhic battles over language. His dual qualification in the US as well as the UK, alongside his India licensure, means that he is able to work well with cross-border clients.”

Tried and trusted

These A-Listers have earned trust through strong advisory skills and consistency. Their clients rely on them not just for legal skills, but for judgement, steadiness and an unwavering commitment.

Poornima Hatti, a partner at Samvad Partners in Bengaluru, has built a reputation as a trusted adviser whose breadth of expertise, integrity and reliable choices earn her a prime position on IBLJ’s A-List.

Affirming this, Amol Datt, a director at Thorogood Associates, shares: “Samvad and Poornima have been advising Thorogood as corporate counsel for over a decade.

“During this period, Poornima has provided comprehensive legal support across a wide spectrum of matters including labour and employment laws, compliance requirements, and the drafting and negotiation of key legal documentation such as supplier and client contracts.”

Datt further notes that “her advice has consistently been clear, precise and commercially relevant, enabling us to operate with confidence within the framework of Indian law”, adding that Poornima is a valued and trusted adviser on complex issues integral to their business operations.

Vineetha MG, a founding partner at Samvad Partners in Mumbai, is described by Shilpa Nautiyal, senior vice president at HDFC Bank in Mumbai, as someone who “combines deep technical knowledge with a solution-oriented approach, making her a trusted adviser”.

Rukmani Seth Virmani, head of legal at Michael & Susan Dell Foundation India Plus in Delhi, notes: “Unlike many managing partners, who may only provide general guidance, Vineetha’s viewpoint is practical yet mitigates risks; her deep expertise in regulatory matters is always very helpful. She is truly someone who leads from the front while giving her colleagues the space and exposure to grow. If I weren’t an in-house lawyer, I would have loved to work at Samvad.”

Pallavi Shroff, a managing partner at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co (SAM) in Delhi, is praised by the legal head at a global manufacturing company in Mumbai, who says: “Pallavi is grounded, progressive and open-minded. Her leadership in making SAM more diverse and inclusive sets the benchmark for having a law firm that not only delivers high-quality legal advice but is also making the world around us more diverse and inclusive.”

When it comes to managing client expectations, a cool temperament with swift decision making is quintessential to win. Clients say Gautam Saha, joint managing partner at TT&A in Mumbai, makes this look effortless.

Imtiaz Farooq, a partner and head of chambers at Farooq & Associates in Dhaka, has worked with Saha and is impressed by his clarity of mind. “With a stellar track record of advising on some of the most complex and high-profile domestic and cross-border transactions, Gautam has consistently demonstrated exceptional legal acumen, strategic foresight and an ability to navigate the intricacies of 含羞草社区 regulatory landscape.”

Imtiaz Farooq

Farooq adds: “I found that clients regard him as a trusted adviser with a rare blend of technical brilliance and commercial sensibility, while peers admire his integrity, leadership and deep influence on the evolution of M&A law in India.”

Todd Leitstein, a director at Nokia in Dallas, Texas, says: “Gautam is a lawyer’s lawyer. There is no task too arduous or matter too complex for him. As the managing partner of the firm, he is called to tackle many issues that would be a distraction for most, but he is never derailed from the task at hand and is capable of managing the most difficult and client-sensitive issues.”

Abhijit Joshi, a founding and managing partner at Veritas Legal in Mumbai, is described by Vageesh Gupta, managing director at investment company Partners Group in Mumbai, as offering a “great combination of legal knowledge that manifests in the form of reliable legal advice and creative solutions, along with practical wisdom especially in higher-stakes situations”.

Rishiraj Khajanchi, a partner and COO at Kedaara Capital in Mumbai, says that, thanks to Joshi, “there is a great blend of legal and commercial knowledge, which results in solution-oriented advice. We turn to him to help take executive decisions and run the same from a legal perspective”.

Marylou Bilawala, joint managing partner at Wadia Ghandy & Co in Mumbai, is widely respected for her tact, timing and attention to detail. Lakshmi Iyer, the group president for investments and director at Bajaj Alternate Investment Management in Mumbai, says Bilawala “is extremely detail-oriented, has great argumentative skills, and her points are extremely focused”.

Saswata Dhar, the president of legal at Pidilite Industries in Mumbai, notes: “Marylou is known for her legal expertise, and has a deep understanding of specific industry sectors such as banking and finance, and manufacturing, which is an enabler to provide the on-time in full legal services to the corporate clients.”

Dhar says: “In matters of corporate transactions, including M&A and those relating to technology transfer and intellectual properties, Marylou has the leading edge in negotiation, drafting and closing of deals,” adding that she manifests excellent leadership qualities.

Shreyas Jayasimha, the founder of Aarna Law in Bengaluru, receives commendation from Vinay Bhagawan, the head of legal and compliance at Daimler India Commercial Vehicles, who says: “Shreyas has demonstrated depth of knowledge across corporate, commercial, regulatory and compliance domains, and consistently delivered pragmatic and business-oriented legal advice that balances risk mitigation with commercial objectives.”

Sumit Garg, the founder of Alpha Corporate Legal in New Delhi, is described by Vishal Gupta, a partner at Anil K Goyal & Associates in Faridabad, as a lawyer of sound judgement. “He deals with large amounts of information, whether it’s laws, evidence or case details. It is his ability to stay calm and composed, even when facing delays or difficulties. It’s his patience that allows him to handle lengthy proceedings and work through challenging cases with clients.”

Shweta Mehta, company secretary at GE Vernova T&D India, an energy equipment manufacturing and services company in New Delhi, adds: “I have known Sumit for the last 19 to 20 years, and he is very focused and diligent in his approach.”

Prompt, persuasive, patient

Drawing on decades of experience and collaboration across complex and high-value matters, for some lawyers a tenacious and persistent nature elicits endorsements. This not only speaks to their legal expertise and commercial insight but also their leadership and the trust that they inspire in their clients.

Sudhinder R, a senior partner at Argus Partners in New Delhi, has more than three decades of experience. Vijay Kamath, head of legal at Skoda Volkswagen in Mumbai, who has relied on his counsel for timely legal support, says: “Sudhinder has been associated with us for the last 20 years and has been instrumental in getting recognition for his firm in his region over the years.”

Anil Kasturi, a senior partner at AZB & Partners in Mumbai, is highly regarded by Gopal Ganatra, an executive director and general counsel at Asahi India Glass in Mumbai, who says: “I have known Anil for approximately 20 years during my stay at AIS. I find Anil to be a very sharp and knowledgeable counsel in the field of corporate law, and someone who understands the nuances of the issue even from a commercial and strategic viewpoint. He finds solutions that cover all aspects of legal, commercial and strategic alignments, all with a smile and tons of patience.”

Vikram Chogle, managing director at Warburg Pincus in Mumbai, also praises Anil, noting he has “a compelling blend of strong legal knowledge and technical know-how, decades of relevant practical experience, a commercial mindset and strong emotional intelligence, which makes him one of the strongest lawyers in the market today.”

Reliability, support and unwavering commitment define Anuja Tiwari’s work style, a senior partner at AZB & Partners in New Delhi. Rajesh Sehgal, a chief legal officer at Adani Power in Ahmedabad, was impressed by Tiwari’s exceptional legal support during a recent acquisition transaction.

Rajesh Sehgal

“Throughout the process, Anuja demonstrated deep expertise in energy laws and advice to the business team on emerging businesses, especially green hydrogen, cooling solutions and business models vis-à-vis optimal EPC [engineering, procurement and construction] and tax structure.”

Sehgal adds: “What stood out most was her and the team’s responsiveness, attention to detail and unwavering commitment to protecting our interests. They worked seamlessly with our internal legal and business teams, often going beyond expectations to meet tight timelines and address evolving deal dynamics.”

Awadhesh Jha, an executive director at Finnish state-owned power company Fortum, describes Tiwari as a “proven M&A specialist with strong structuring, diligence and execution skills”.

“She is a persuasive negotiator who resolves deadlocks and preserves deal momentum,” says Jha. “She has uncompromising integrity that delivers conflict-free, commercially grounded advice. She is diligent, detail-oriented and dependable – owns outcomes end-to-end. Client-first mindset: clear communication, pragmatic solutions, timely delivery. I trust her for judgement, reliability and results.”

Pragmatism under pressure

At the upper end of corporate practice, some lawyers stand out, particularly those who stay composed under pressure. They combine technical command with calm judgement, turning demanding deals and tight timelines into near perfect outcomes.

Darshika Kothari, a senior partner at AZB & Partners in Mumbai, is praised by Rajiv Chandan, chief general counsel and a company secretary at Tata Chemicals in Mumbai. “[Darshika is] distinguished by her deep expertise and consistent track record in high-value transactions. She routinely advises on complex joint ventures, large-scale acquisitions and intricate mergers and demergers, particularly those involving listed companies and regulated entities.”

Chandan adds: “Beyond technical excellence, Darshika is recognised for her strategic insight, pragmatic problem solving and ability to drive deals to closure, making her a highly sought after adviser for marquee transactions in 含羞草社区 dynamic corporate landscape.”

Rajiv Chandan

Anuja Saxena, an associate vice president and the head of legal at Welspun Corp, an international company that specialises in manufacturing large-diameter pipes in Mumbai, says: “Darshika Kothari is an exceptional lawyer whose depth of legal expertise is matched by her ability to navigate complex matters with precision and foresight. She combines a strong command over nuanced legal principles with a practical, solutions-oriented approach that inspires confidence among clients and colleagues alike.”

“Known for her sharp analytical skills, strategic thinking and unwavering professionalism, Darshika consistently delivers value in high-stakes matters, while also building trusted relationships grounded in integrity and sound judgement.”

Kavitha Vijay, a senior partner at Chugh Universal Legal in Chennai, is commended by Kanakadhara Srinivasan, a partner at Initium Partners, an investment banking company in Chennai. “What sets Kavitha apart is not just her command of the law, but also her collaborative style and responsiveness under pressure. Kavitha’s professionalism and client-first mindset make her stand out as one of the most reliable lawyers I have worked with,” says Srinivasan.

In the loop

When clients are scattered across continents, the real test of legal counsel is the ability to stay aligned, accessible and effective. Technical clarity, steady communication and cross-border fluency keep global clients in the loop and deals moving without pause.

Vineet Aneja, managing partner at Clasis Law in New Delhi, consistently demonstrates this skill. Practising domestically has the advantage of being in the same time zone, but global clients present a different challenge.

Jennie Rimmer, the group head of tax at Canopius in London, shares her experience working with Aneja. “Vineet assisted me with a technically and practically difficult matter that had a short timeframe to complete. He was responsive at all times despite the time difference, and kept me informed of progress once the actions had been determined.

“He has a deep technical knowledge, but what makes him stand out from others I have worked with in the past is his ability to unpick technical issues and find a practical resolution that works for his client.”

Edmund Ronald Ribeiro, CFO for the Middle East and North Africa region at Interwell in Dubai, says Vineet is widely regarded as an outstanding lawyer with a deep understanding of “commercial realities” in India. He combines strong “legal acumen” with practical “business insight”, delivering advice that is strategically relevant, solution-oriented and balanced in its approach to “risk and opportunity”.

Zack Quek, general counsel at Ninja Van, one of Southeast Asia’s leading e-commerce and B2B logistics services providers based in Singapore, says: “Vineet has consistently demonstrated that he is a legal industry titan. In the course of negotiations, it is clear that his views are clearly respected and considered by counterparties, which had a positive impact on the outcome. In addition, his solutions to navigate the myriad of Indian regulations are friendly to foreign investors.”

Valentino Stellini, CEO at Stellini International, an Italian textile manufacturing company based in Mendrisio, Switzerland, notes: “Throughout our collaboration, Aneja has consistently demonstrated exceptional professionalism, legal insight and a deep understanding of cross-border business dynamics.”

Kaushik Mukherjee, a partner at CMS IndusLaw in Mumbai, is commended by Narayan Kedia, head of legal at Sammaan Capital in Mumbai, who says that Mukherjee has been a constant adviser for Sammaan in complex structuring exercises. “Kaushik’s expertise spans both equity and debt issuances, with a strong focus on navigating intricate SEBI [Securities and Exchange Board of India] and stock exchange requirements.

Narayan Kedia

“His in-depth precision, commitment and ability to simplify regulatory complexities have made him a dependable and invaluable counsel for us.”

Strategic foresight

In a market where complexity is the norm, the uncanny ability to see several steps ahead sets certain lawyers apart. These are practitioners whose strategic judgement, technical depth and calm leadership consistently guide major transactions to successful outcomes.

Ajay Sawhney, a partner at Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas in New Delhi, is praised by Jignesh Shah, head of infrastructure at Alpha Alternatives, an investment solutions firm in Mumbai, for his “pragmatic solutions”, which keep “the best interests of his clients in mind. Ajay has a sharp legal mind, problem solving approach, and an approachable personality”.

Mita Chojal, general counsel and a board member at Air Products India in Pune, is impressed with Sawhney’s comfortable blending of technique with the ability to handle all aspects of a full project life cycle.

“Setting Ajay apart is not only his technical mastery but also his collaborative spirit, ethical grounding and unwavering commitment to excellence,” says Chojal. “His contributions leave a lasting imprint, and he exemplifies the leadership and professionalism that this award seeks to recognise.”

Ajay Kharbanda, CLO (North and West) at GMR Airports in Delhi, describes Sawhney as “humble, agile, solution-driven, innovative, diverse, knowledgeable and well respected, a good team mentor”, noting that “Ajay works on all financing transactions of GMR. He works on transactions of various infra industries of India. He has provided remarkable contributions to the industry through innovative deal closure tactics.”

Legal navigators

Law is an intersection where regulation, risk and commercial realities must converge. Some lawyers excel by guiding clients through complexity with clarity and precision. These practitioners navigate through rough waters while maintaining client loyalty. They shine because they have mastered the art of legal manoeuvring.

Biplab Lenin, a partner (pharma, healthcare and life sciences) at Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas in New Delhi, is praised by Shreenivas Joshi, general counsel at Enrich Energy in Pune. “Biplab is the ideal sounding board for general counsel to get a quick insight on the current regulatory position vis-à-vis prospective business outlook,” says Joshi.

“The fact that Biplab can back it up with a sound and detailed memo is testament to his deep knowledge and real-life expertise of navigating the complex regulatory and commercial landscape of pharma and life sciences. His army school discipline and ethics, coupled with his business-centric approach, make him my go-to guy for crunch assignments as well as strategic advice.”

AZB - Partners Nov 2026 A-List

Manish Upadhyay, a vice president at Kedara Trading, an FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) and tobacco manufacturer in Mumbai, narrates how he and his company benefitted from Lenin’s expertise. “Lenin has guided us through very tough and stringent COPTA [Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003] and legal metrology laws in India, handholding and guiding packaging, go-to-market and communication efforts,” says Upadhyay.

“He went beyond, into the depths of the subjects, in order to steer us away from any likely risk and omission regarding matters related to the sensitive and highly watched category of cigarettes. This not only helped us, but our foreign principals and brand custodians, and eventually the consumer at large who consciously chooses our brand over spurious brands.”

With two decades of experience, M&A expert Aninda Pal, a partner at DSK Legal in Mumbai, is popular for his enthusiastic appeal and legal navigation skills, earning the trust of his clients.

Mainak Bhattacharya, an India team leader at Canadian Solar South East Asia in Delhi, says: “Aninda speaks the business language so eloquently that business leaders are not intimidated by technicalities, and that really makes him an integral part of a complex business transaction.”

Mandeep Borah, senior vice president at Edme Insurance Brokers in Mumbai, observes: “Aninda is a standout legal adviser, combining expertise in M&A and private equity with a strong commercial perspective. He is trusted by executives for his clear guidance and skilled negotiations that consistently achieve balanced outcomes.”

Sanjoy Roy, vice president at The Modern Data Company in Bengaluru, worked with DSK’s Pal on an acquisition deal where his company was being acquired by Pal’s client. Roy says that Pal, as the dealmaker, made his life easier. “I’m from a business background with virtually no legal exposure, and the complexities of an M&A transaction were entirely new to me,” says Roy. “Despite representing the other side, Aninda always ensured his team was patient, and he personally helped me understand the nuances of every detail we were signing.”

Going beyond the realms of corporate law is Aparajit Bhattacharya, a partner at DSK Legal in Delhi, who stands out for his social commitment alongside his legal practice.

Patrick Emery, an associate vice president for Asia at Cure Blindness Foundation India, an NGO in New Delhi, has worked alongside Bhattacharya, and admires “his commitment to advancing social impact through legal work. For many years, he has been a trusted legal adviser and partner to our NGO, consistently demonstrating an exceptional blend of legal expertise, integrity and dedication to public service.”

Abhishek Bhalla, head of legal for M&A and contracts at ReNew in Gurugram, notes: “Aparajit Bhattacharya’s work on behalf of ReNew has been instrumental in securing highly favourable outcomes on several critical M&A deals. He is a meticulous negotiator, known for his commercial acumen and a proactive, solution-oriented approach that consistently adds value beyond standard legal advice.”

Dinesh Pardasani, a partner at DSK Legal in New Delhi, is commended for his deep understanding of the law, and calm strategic mindset. Komal Goyal, general counsel at Hitachi Rail STS India in Bengaluru, says: “Dinesh has been our trusted legal adviser for high-stakes disputes and strategic counsel across a range of complex matters. For organisations seeking seasoned representation in critical litigation or arbitration, I would strongly recommend Dinesh and his team.”

Rohit Jain, deputy managing partner at Economic Laws Practice in Mumbai, earns acclaim from Sameer Pradhan, assistant vice president and head, indirect tax at JSW Steel in Mumbai, who says Jain is a highly effective tax practitioner known for his “policy-driven approach”, strong advocacy skills, and consistent success before senior tax authorities and courts.

Sudip Mullick, a partner at Economic Laws Practice in Mumbai, is recognised for his outstanding real estate practice, which cemented his place in the A-List, and for his commitment to the principles of natural justice.

Dilip Ugade, senior counsel at Tata Communications in Mumbai, says: “Sudip Mullick is an authority in real estate transactions. He has innovative solutions for complicated deal structuring and a practical approach to conclude the transaction on principles of equity, natural justice and good conscience.”

Ugade adds that Mullick recently closed one of the largest real estate transactions in terms of consideration for Tata Communications.

Effort and outcome

Where precision and perseverance determine results, certain lawyers distinguish themselves through unwavering effort and exceptional outcomes. These are practitioners with deep expertise, a commitment to excellence, and a client-centred approach.

Sandeep Parekh, a managing partner at Finsec Law Advisors in Mumbai, is recognised by Babu Rao, global general counsel at Religare in Mumbai, who worked with Parekh on “one of the biggest SEBI matters for recovery of money”. Rao says that “he is very focused on his work, with an eye for detail”.

Hardeep Singh, vice president at CoinDCX, a Bitcoin investment and crypto trading company in New Delhi, says: “Sandeep makes extra efforts to align on approach from the beginning, making efforts to understand the product demands and then close the opinion and advice. His nuanced approach is perfectly aligned with the complex nature of emerging technologies and industries, and he is an asset to have as an external counsel.”

Anup Bagchi, managing director and CEO at ICICI Prudential Life Insurance in Mumbai, describes Parekh’s “sharp and comprehensive understanding of the core issue, and deep research on appropriate solution, how to frame, present and debate”.

Shweta Bharti, a managing partner at Hammurabi & Solomon Partners in New Delhi, is one of the most sought-after lawyers for mission-critical matters by clients. Navin Vyas, legal counsel at Castrol India in Mumbai, says: “For high-impact, complex matters, Shweta is our first choice. Her out-of-the-box thinking and strategic foresight have consistently led us to the right outcomes.”

Dhara Doshi, the head of legal at Decathlon in Bengaluru, says: “Shweta’s approach is both fearless and innovative. She has consistently delivered results in situations where conventional strategies would have fallen short.”

The legal world is usually a hubbub of risk and profit. For certain lawyers, a silent strategy backed by a clear vision creates a huge difference for their clients. One such lawyer is Gautam Khurana, managing partner at India Law Offices in New Delhi.

Gulshan Bhatla, managing director at Genext Logistics in New Delhi, says: “For a business owner, there cannot be a better lawyer than Gautam Khurana.” Bhatla is impressed by the way Khurana handled the company’s overseas operations. “He helped Genext set up offices in Singapore and Austria, and made the whole process as smooth as it can be,” says Bhatla.

“The best part about him is that he makes you think and set up a clear roadmap for the company for the long term, and then supports it with legal systems, which makes you feel very secure in this dynamic environment. He is a true example of ‘prevention is better than cure’.”

Client relationships

Strong client relationships lie at the heart of effective legal practice, built on an unwavering commitment to quality. Through their dedication, expertise and reliability, these lawyers have earned deep respect and enduring partnerships across jurisdictions. When done well, legal services pave the way for longstanding client-partner relationships.

Mamta Rani Jha, a senior partner at Inttl Advocare in New Delhi, is widely recognised for her consistency and reliability in IP matters. Tony Yeo, a director at Drew & Napier in Singapore, says: “Mamta has worked with us for a number of years. She has been outstanding in her work and has worked tirelessly on matters that we have worked on. I trust her advice totally on IP law in India.”

Linda Wang, a senior partner at ZICO IP in Kuala Lumpur who has worked with Jha on numerous IP matters in India, says: “As ZICO IP is an Asean regional practice, our clients include companies and MNCs [multinational corporations] operating in Asean countries. We are both also longstanding counsel for common clients such as Nestlé in our respective jurisdictions.”

Wang adds: “There have been complex and difficult cases that we and our clients have encountered with IP issues in India. Mamta has always delivered on her role as legal counsel – reliably, timely and performing beyond expectations.”

Madhurima Mukherjee Saha, a partner at JSA in New Delhi, is similarly commended for her leadership and clarity. Urvil Desai, a deputy company secretary at chemical manufacturer UPL in Mumbai, worked with Saha during a rights issue process. “I was deeply impressed by her clarity of thought, command over legal intricacies, and her ability to lead with both confidence and grace,” says Desai. “I believe she is a truly deserving candidate for this recognition and I am proud to support her nomination.”

Legal Buddhas

While certain lawyers are known for their candid approach, a few believe in strategising in silence and delivering outcomes in public. Their calm, collected composure serves as reassurance for their clients.

Vikram Raghani, a partner at JSA in Mumbai, has served the firm for more than two decades and is best known for his quick response time and grace under pressure. Ashish Agrawal, a partner at global investment organisation EQT in Mumbai, says: “Vikram is a very competent and results-oriented lawyer. He is able to remain calm under tense situations and negotiations, which makes for better outcomes.”

Agrawal adds: “Vikram and his team are very responsive to clients’ needs. He is also very hardworking and leads his team accordingly. This enables the client to remain on top of timebound private equity processes,” enabling “a productive client-legal adviser relationship, which is crucial during consultations and negotiations. I am confident that Vikram will continue on to greater heights in the years to come”.

Bhushan Shah, a partner at Mansukhlal Hiralal & Co in Mumbai, is similarly commended for his steady approach. Paresh Mehta, managing director at Kilitch Healthcare in Mumbai, says: “Bhushan provides end-to-end support, from structuring and contracts to contentious matters. He is calm, thorough and efficient, with a strong grasp of sector nuances and regulatory expectations. His guidance is practical, cost-aware and geared to closing issues rather than prolonging them.
