Introduction
David Bulley is the Asia managing partner of Appleby and leads the private equity, M&A and restructuring practices. He is widely recognised as a leading authority in offshore legal services. In the past five years, he has led on PE and M&A transactions totalling more than USD170 billion and provided legal counsel on restructuring and litigation matters exceeding USD550 billion, demonstrating exceptional expertise and industry influence.
As the only lawyer based in mainland China admitted to practise in the Cayman Islands, David is highly proficient in the laws of the Cayman Islands, the British Virgin Islands and Bermuda. He regularly advises sponsors, state-owned enterprises and multinational corporations on high-value, complex cross-border M&A, leveraged buyouts and debt restructurings. He is particularly distinguished in restructuring, having successfully represented many major Chinese property developers, including China Fortune, Fantasia, Shimao Group and Shinsun, in complex offshore debt workouts. Notably, he successfully defended Shinsun against a winding- up petition, setting a landmark precedent in the Cayman Islands that has since been adopted in Hong Kong.
In the PE space, David brings extensive international deal experience. He provides legal support to leading US, European and Asia-based private equity funds and investors, playing a key role in numerous major acquisitions and exits across Asia and globally. These transactions span cutting-edge sectors such as technology, fintech and artificial intelligence, and often involve multi-jurisdictional co-ordination, highlighting David’s strategic value and deep expertise in cross-border investment.
David holds a Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws from Cambridge University and has passed CFA Level I, giving him a strong interdisciplinary foundation in law and finance. He previously practised at leading London and international firms, including Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Kirkland & Ellis and Sullivan & Cromwell, and spent time with Goldman Sachs. His achievements have been consistently recognised by top international legal ranking agencies, and he has received honours including “Cayman M&A Lawyer of the Year” for the past six years running and “Top 50 Offshore Lawyers.” With his deep legal acumen, sharp commercial insight and outstanding cross-border co-ordination skills, David continues to shape the frontier of offshore legal practice in Asia.
