Ashurst‘s Canberra office, known for its Commonwealth government practice, is set to join Thomson Geer, effective early July.

“The expansion reflects how Australia-based law firms are filling the gap left by international firms that have reduced their exposure to panel work for the Australian government or left the country altogether, such as Hogan Lovells,” Adrian Tembel, the chief executive partner at Thomson Geer, told Asia Business Law Journal. Regulatory and life sciences partner Mandi Jacobson also joined Thomson Geer’s Sydney office from Hogan Lovells last month.

This collaboration stems from Ashurst‘s decision to wind down its work for the Commonwealth. As part of this integration, the Canberra office will officially join Thomson Geer in early July 2025.

The team transitioning to Thomson Geer comprises Rob Andersen, Mathew Baldwin, Melanie McKean, Steve McKinney, Sarah Ross-Smith, Elissa Speight and Angela Summersby.

“The new partners advise [on matters] across the dispute resolution, workplace relations, major projects and digital economy practice areas,” added Tembel.

Thomson Geer and Ashurst are working closely with Commonwealth clients to ensure a seamless transition of ongoing work.
